Southern Loans Frequently Asked Questions

What is a personal loan?

A personal loan from Southern Loans is a small, fixed-term installment loan you can use for just about any personal need — from unexpected expenses to family vacations. Made under North Carolina’s Consumer Finance Act, these loans come with clear, regulated terms: a set interest rate, a fixed monthly payment, and a repayment schedule you know from day one.

How is a personal loan different than a title loan?

Southern Loans makes personal installment loans under North Carolina’s Consumer Finance Act — we don’t offer “title loans” the way they’re structured and legally permitted in states like South Carolina.

Here’s the real difference:

  • We look at your ability to repay, not just your vehicle. A personal loan is based on your income, credit history, and overall ability to repay — your vehicle (when used as collateral) is one factor, not the sole basis for the loan. A true title loan is typically approved based mainly on the vehicle’s value, with little or no consideration of whether you can actually afford to repay it.
  • Predictable payments over time. Our loans are fixed-term installment loans — you make equal monthly payments over a set schedule you agree to upfront. Title loans are often short-term (frequently 30 days) with a single lump-sum payoff, and if you can’t pay it off, you’re rolled into a new loan with new fees — which is how many title loan borrowers end up trapped in a costly renewal cycle.
  • Regulated interest rates. Rates on our loans are capped under North Carolina law. Title loans in states where they’re permitted often carry much higher rates with far fewer limits.
  • A vehicle may secure the loan — it’s not the loan. We sometimes take a vehicle as collateral (alongside other requirements like proof of income and credit review), but that’s different from a title loan product, where the vehicle title itself is essentially the entire underwriting basis and the loan is structured around quick, short-term repossession risk if you fall behind.

Bottom line: even when a Southern Loans loan is secured by a vehicle, it’s a regulated NC installment loan built around your ability to repay — not a short-term title loan.

Why should I borrow from Southern Loans instead of an Internet Lender?

Many online lenders that advertise to North Carolina residents are not licensed under the NC Consumer Finance Act. Because they aren’t NC-licensed, they aren’t bound by the same rate caps — and as a result, some internet lenders charge North Carolina borrowers annual percentage rates far higher than what a licensed NC consumer finance company is legally permitted to charge.

Before you borrow anywhere, it’s worth asking:

  • Is this lender licensed in North Carolina?
  • What’s the actual APR — not just the payment amount?
  • Who do I contact, and where, if something goes wrong?

The bottom line: when you borrow from Southern Loans, you’re borrowing from a locally licensed, state-regulated lender with real branches, real people, and a rate capped by North Carolina law.

What do I need for a loan?

To qualify for a loan with Southern Loans, we typically look for:

  • A stable place to call home — generally at least a year
  • Reliable income — whether that’s a job, Social Security, retirement, or another steady source
  • A less-than-perfect credit score doesn’t necessarily rule you out — we look for a reasonable history of paying what you owe

That’s it in plain terms. Specific requirements vary a bit by loan type, and your local branch can walk you through exactly what fits your situation.

Do you have a minimum credit score?

No — we don’t use a minimum credit score as a cutoff. Instead, we look at your overall credit history to understand your ability and likelihood to repay. We typically want to see 2 to 3 good credit references, and if there’s recent derogatory credit on your report, we’ll ask you to explain it.

In short: your credit score is one piece of the picture, not the whole picture. We’d rather understand your situation than just run a number.

How soon will I know if I am approved?

For most loans, our goal is to give you a decision within an hour of completing your application. Larger loan amounts may take a bit longer, since they go through an additional review step. Either way, we’ll keep you updated on where things stand.

Is there a penalty if I pay off my loan early?

For personal loans, there is no penalty if you choose to pay off your loan early.

Do you report to a credit bureau?

Yes — we report your loan payment history to Equifax on a monthly basis. Making your payments on time can help build or improve your credit, so it’s worth keeping that in mind as you plan your payment schedule.
